“As a home is to an orphan, a word is to a writer." – Kathy S. Hartwell

“If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing.” -- Benjamin Franklin

References

"After exhaustive research, I selected Kathy to edit and critique my first book.  What I got back from her convinced me that this was one of the best decisions I had made during the entire project.  Her work was detailed, instructive, and highly inspirational.  She has the skill to not only spot crucial errors, but also provide marvelous suggestions for improvement.  Kathy's special talent is in her ability to instill confidence in your writing and the determination to see it through to publication." -- Brad Paul, CA, author, Finding the One Who's Right and The Couple's Review.

Approximately 250 words per page

DO NOT SEND THE ONLY COPY OF YOUR MANUSCRIPT OR ONE YOU DO NOT WANT MARKED (EDITED) ON

With my critique, I will:

Be your mentor and teacher.  Instead of just showing you where your writing weaknesses are, I will explain how to overcome them.  In addition, I will continue to work with you until you reach the writing level that is right for you.  “The door of Wisdom is never shut.” –Benjamin Franklin

Treat you with respect and compassion.  My critique will be constructive not destructive.  I want to improve your writing, and at the same time, show you that revisions can be fun.  “Tart Words make no friends: a spoonful of honey will catch more flies than a Gallon of Vinegar.”  -- Benjamin Franklin

Use humor where appropriate.  It is a scientific fact that people retain more information when humor is used.  “Virtue and Happiness are Mother and Daughter.” – Benjamin Franklin

Correct grammatical and spelling errors on your manuscript in pencil.  Like a professor taught me, I believe that writing errors are not permanent, and an error is not an error if it has been corrected.  “Well done, is twice done.”  -- Benjamin Franklin

I will instruct you on how to use more effective wording, line-by-line.  “Reading makes a full man - Meditation a profound man – Discourse a clear man.”  -- Benjamin Franklin

Specify areas that are especially well written, so you will know where your strengths are.  “Hide not your talents, they for Use were made: What’s a Sun-Dial in the Shade?” – Benjamin Franklin

Offer suggestions for plot and character development or other areas that can be strengthened.  “A good example is the best Sermon.” – Benjamin Franklin

Return several pages of an analysis of your work.  This will include evaluation of: plot, setting, characterization, dialogue, special effects (flash forwards, flashbacks, etc.), voice, point of view and any other areas particular to your work.  “The Things which hurt, instruct.” – Benjamin Franklin

Will recommend reading or other resources that will strengthen your areas of weakness.  “An empty bag cannot stand upright.” – Benjamin Franklin

Answer any questions you may have by Email.  “Have you somewhat to do tomorrow, do it today.” – Benjamin Franklin

Provide my telephone number for a personal follow-up, if you desire.  “If you would have guests merry with cheer, be so yourself, or so at least appear.” – Benjamin Franklin

When I will look at your manuscript

As soon as I reasonably can!  I have experienced (firsthand) the unending nailbiting wait for my manuscript to return to me.  Most of the time, your manuscript will be mailed back to you within two weeks; however, it would not be such a bad idea to Email me for the current turnaround time.
